Star Wars: Death Troopers quick review!

Current Star Wars read: Death Troopers

Phooey! Been quite sometime since my last posting. Work has technically grasped me by the neck and I'm usually dead tired by the time I got home. Guess I have a lot of catching up to do from now on. Right, to deviate a bit from the usual toy reviews, today I just wanna talk about a Star Wars novel I've recently read. I've actually first blabbed about this novel way back in Sept '09. Since then I've been holding off from buying the book as the hardcover version costs a bomb and the paperback version was oddly priced at a premium (never knew why). So when I saw this going for about USD 5 (brand new at that!) it was a no-brainer purchase for me.

To cut things short, this book combines the two of the most revered interests of mine, i.e. Star Wars and the zombie-verse! Being an ardent George A Romero fan, I was ecstatic to learn that this Star Wars novel actually delved into the world of zombies! Yup, you've read it right.....zombies....in space! Honestly speaking, the story started off rather slow but I kinda understand that the writer (Joe Schreiber) wanted to give each protagonists their own build-up and back-story before the whole undead chaos begins.

Set just before the events of "A New Hope", the novel also includes two very familiar characters from the Original Star Wars trilogy! Through tales of deceit, survival, comradeship and cannibalism (yes, there were acts of cannibalism IN ADDITION to the the obvious zombies running amuck!), we are taken through the whole horrific ordeal of the survivors as they make their way out from a prison barge and eventually escape from a badly infested Star Destroyer.

The novel was an apparent success that Schreiber was signed on to write the 'prequel' to Death Troopers entitled 'Red Harvest', which was eventually released in Dec '10. Red Harvest tells the story of how the virus first came into existence via some evil scheming by a Sith Lord. I'm definitely gonna wait for the paperback version to come out as I'm not willing to fork out the extra dough to get the current hardcover release...LOL!

So what are you waiting for? If you're a fan of Star Wars or simply just a zombie-buff (or better still BOTH!) and you haven't read Death Troopers already, then I can't recommend the book enough for you!

I've been curious about this book for a long time, but wasn't sure how Zombies/Star Wars would mesh up together. If you're saying it's good, though, maybe i'll pick it up in my next round of books :)
