HBO's Watchmen Season 1 Episode 2 afterthoughts

When an episode is titled Martial Feats of Comanche Horsemanships, you just know that it's gonna get complicated. And yes, it was a complicated episode with all sorts of revelation and 'What?!' moments. I personally think (I and definitely think others would think so too) that this week's episode was a great step of improvement over last week's pilot episode.

The episode picks up where we left off last week and this time around it was rather shown from old man Will Reeves' point of view. Angela arrested the poor dude who happily admitted that he hung Chief Crawford on the tree to her disbelief. Instead of hauling him directly to the police station, she hid him in her bakery for her to grill the old man herself for some answers. Something's definitely going on with old man Reeves for sure.

When Angela came back the next morning to the crime scene as her alter ego Sister Night, there is a homage to that scene from the original graphic novel and '09 movie. Officer Glass is shown asking for food in Angela's car and he half rolled his mask up to munch away the nuts found in the car's glove box. He later repeated this at his own apartment although I wonder why he needed to still be in his mask in the comfort of his own home.

We also got to see how the first masked vigilante i.e. the Hooded Justice first came into the scene during a robbery in a Great Depression era sundry store and supposedly inspired countless other masked heroes to do the same since. I think this is a cool throwback to the original graphic novel which implicitly revealed a circus strongman, Rolf Muller to be the Hooded Justice when Muller was in fact found dead with a bullet at the back of his head at a pier at the beginning of a documentary on TV. See how Lindelof (that's the producer of this new TV series) is trying to link up with the minute elements from the original graphic novel? Nicely done.
.
.
How about that opening scene that shows how the Nazi tried to manipulate the minds of the African Americans who fought against Nazi Germany during the first great war? I take it that the producer is trying to drive in the racism theme which was evidently was an enemy present even from within.

Later when Angela had that flashback of the night of the mass attempted murder of police officers, known as White Night on that particular Christmas eve, we learnt that she owed a great deal of gratitude to Chief Crawford, or Judd as he was affectionately known to his closest friends, supposedly for saving her during the fateful night. But where was her husband Cal during the attempted murder? Wasn't he with her during that night? There's just so much speculations in my mind right now and I'd like to think that Cal had something to do with the attempt on her life. I know, I think of the worse.

I like it that they're trying to paint Adrian Veidt (formerly known as Ozymandias, or is he still?) is painted like a genius madman. That little play he coordinated, which undoubtedly referring to Dr Manhattan's origins, and his use of 'clones' to which he disposed off as he pleases is just pure insanity to say the least. I feel that Veidt may be playing a bigger role in the coming episodes. I don't think he's lost any of his crazy evil genius ideals since we last saw him at the end of the original Watchmen movie. I can't wait to see what Veidt has in mind next.

Old man Reeves wasn't just a useless looney bin after all when he claimed that Angela might find something that'll blow her mind of the charts when he visits the Crawford's family mansion for Judd's funeral wake. The discovery of the KKK hooded uniform was just too much of a coincidence because Don Johnson also played Big Daddy, a KKK sympathizer and active member, in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained film! I had a big laugh about this in my writings of Episode 1 last week.

The biggest surprise of the episode however came in the form of the reveal of old man Reeves' connection to Angela. To end a very shocking episode which was full of mind blowing revelations, old man Reeves just had to say that he has friends in high places that'll get him out of jail if Angela decides to arrest him. The old man literally was saved by somebody from above and one could only speculate what/who came for him until we get to see Episode 3 next week.

Looks like HBO's Watchmen is starting to get very interesting indeed.
