The Rise of Skywalker Final Trailer afterthoughts

Monday Night Football came and Star Wars fans got exactly what they were waiting for. I'm a little behind with my writings on this but rest assured I've watched this within minutes as the trailer made it's appearance on the big screen during the football game in the States. Countless reviews and criticisms made their way online right after and understandably it has divided, yet again, the Star Wars fanbase.

I'm not gonna into the whole 'I only watch the Original Trilogy films' or 'I only watch SW films when George was in charge' or 'I hate Rian Johnson' or 'Disney Star Wars destroyed my childhood' arguments because everyone has their own views on things. To each their own. Sometimes it's the differences that unite us. Differing in opinion can only lead to improvements in the future.

I'm gonna stop now before I start to sound like a management guru.

So coming back to the trailer, here are some of my thoughts about it. The trailer has obviously become a staple diet for me whenever I go online but your thoughts may differ from mine so let's hear them out if you have the time to leave them in the comments section below:

1. Sheev Palpatine's coming back - that throne just seems brutal, too brutal in fact for a Star Wars film. I thought it'd be better and more suitable for Skeletor in a live-action He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie. Apparently it was taken off the concept art for the Return of the Jedi film in the early 80s and I think it's great to see Disney paying homage to George Lucas' original vision. Is the Emperor making an outright comeback? Is he coming back through one of his clones? Was he alive all this while and waiting for the right moment to spring back into the limelight? All this will of course be answered in December and until then let's just sit back and enjoy the countless arguments and theories on social media.

2. An almighty secret is inevitable to be revelead on Rey's background - let's face it, we've finally arrived at the final film from the third and final trilogy of the whole Skywalker Saga and sure some sort of revelation is about to be made on the central figure i.e. Rey. Ever wondered why everyone seem to have a soft spot for her? Han, Leia and Luke were suspiciously nice to Rey and this may be an indication that everyone knew her from before. I may wrong on this but Disney/Lucasfilm's not gonna waste a two-film build up to NOT to do something great with the character. My guess? Rey is one of Palpatine's clone, just like Snoke (who was a genetic failure) and Palpatine is just waiting to see which one would be suitable for him to jump into when the time is right. Wait, so that means there could be other clones? So Ben Solo was wrong when he said Rey's parents were common drunkards? Come on, let's hear it from all. You may have a better theory than me.

3.  Ghost from Star Wars Rebels can be seen beside the Falcon - the moment fans saw the famous Rebels ship hovering alongside the Millenium Falcon, everyone went into a frenzy.  Does that mean that Sabine Wren or Hera Syndulla still around? How about Chopper or Zeb? Fans of the animated TV series may be ecstatic to know that the ship has survived over 30 years of battle and may still be piloted by (some of) the original crew members but I'm more excited to see how these animated character look in the flesh, if indeed they're making actual appearances in the TROS film.

4. The Rebellion/Resistance's gaining traction again - we can clearly see that some sort of a briefing room was full of Rebel/Resistance fighters and crew members akin to what we've seen in The Force Awakens. Some sort of time jump has occured between the end of The Last Jedi and the beginning of the new film so I take it that Leia's message/beacon has somehow convinced others to finally join in the fight against the First Order. Could her message has somehow recalled all of those previously in hiding to join in the fight? This could be a very interesting plot and give JJ Abrams a variety of characters (even those previously unheard of in TFA or TLJ even) to make appearances in TROS.

5. Threepio's last stand - Anthony Daniels has in fact publicly announced that The Rise of Skywalker would be his last Star Wars film before fans were literally heartbroken by C3-P0's dialogue in the trailer. Threepio telling everyone that he wants to take a last look at his friends before something is somehow depressing to hear. Undeniably Threepio and Artoo, aka the only two characters that had survived and appeared in all eight (soon to be nine) Star Wars saga movies is part of the whole Skywalker lore and will leave a huge impact in everyone's heart. Let's just hope that the Goldenrod or Artoo gets a stellar send-off if their time is indeed up.

6. Emperor's Throne Room Duel - that fight that's about to go down between Rey and Kylo Ren inside the Emperor's old throne room on the remnants of the second Death Star is somehow the one that got me most. Okay, admittedly I still scream like a little boy inside of me whenever nostalgic elements from the OT is transferred onto the new Disney-era Star Wars films (re: Rogue One) but there are just too many questions in my head when I saw that scene. As a start, I still can't tell if the Death Star remnants fell into some ocean on Endor or some other planets, because the first TROS trailer showed or heroes standing on some sort of beach overlookin the DS remnants and that didn't look like Endor for sure. Secondly, even after that Death Star destruction cause by Lando, Nien Nunb and Wedge Antilles, we're supposed to accept that a large portion of the Throne Room somehow survived the nuclear explosion and fell nicely into the sea of Endor/some random planet? Whatever it is, it is a fitting throwback to the climax fight in the Return of the Jedi so i have no complaints on it but I hope we do get some sort of explanation on how the remnants survived, partly intact, on that planet.

7. Rey and Kylo both destroying the remains of Darth Vader's helmet - this is still a blur to me. Rey and Kylo were both about to go head-to-head in that Throne Room but they were seen both bashing the heck out of what seems to be the remnants of Darth Vader's helmet? Is that real or is it part of a dream sequence? My money's on both Rey and Ben Solo finally coming to terms and has somehow decided to let go of the past i.e. we could be actually seeing the end part of TROS here. But how does this fit into the rumor that Hayden Christensen's making an appearance in the film? Maybe Anakin's force ghost will be present during the scene and he will be explicitly asking both Rey and Kylo to destroy the remnants of his old helmet to ensure that they don't hold on to the past anymore. Maybe.

Well, that's pretty much it from me. I'd love to hear from other Star Wars enthusiasts on these although I don't expect much traffic here on blogs anymore because the whole lot of you are probably busy on fb, twitter or IG anyway. But if you do have the time then go ahead and let me know your thoughts on the new & final trailer.

May the Force be with us....always.
