Afterthoughts on The Batman

Caught The Batman the other day with the fam. We went into the cinema hall with such hope and anticipation for the new Bat flick and boy, were we glad to not being disappointed.

I'm going to make this a quick one because the new Bat flick has inadvertently and expectedly divided the fandom already. My fam and I are hopping on the 'people who liked it' train. Lots of fans can be seen already dissing Pattinson's portrayal as Bruce Wayne but I think he's given a superb portrayal as a Year Two Batman/Bruce Wayne, re: McFarlane's graphic novel etc.  (which is the basis of Matt Reeves' movie in the first place). The young Y2 Bruce Wayne is portrayed as being carefree, often emotional and unstable at times and evidently Pattinson carried these traits brilliantly in the movie. Bale & Affleck were excellent in their respective roles as older Batmen (Batman Begins was a good 'Year Zero' too!) but it's great to finally see the earlier days of Bruce Wayne through another director's vision.

Something about Paul Dano that makes him a perfect actor for any psycho characters. He nailed this new sadistic Riddler personae brilliantly. How about that superb chemistry between Bats and Jim Gordon? This Batman rocks because he's a detective first and not necessarily a thug. Also, thank God for his normal voice because I can't stand a Batman with a sore throat.

The Batman deserves full point not because of its excellent noir style of storytelling alone but also for its fresh take on the formative years of Bruce Wayne.
