Hot Toys Avengers movie Captain America....

Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

When it comes to supplying 1/6 Hot Toys action figures, my current 'toy-pusher' dude is a tad bit late in getting his stock into his store. I know the fact that some of you out there have been receiving the Captain here as early as late-January '13 or some during February '13. I'm getting really annoyed as most collectors here in Malaysia (or Singapore for that matter) already have Thor and Black Widow in hand....God knows when I'll be getting mine....LOL. Well, change is always good if it means that I'll get my HT at par with the rest of the collecting community out there! Time to switch 'allegiance' soon. Aaaaanyway, enough with the rants and let's hear what yours truly think about Hot Toys' 1/6 Avengers movie Captain America figure here, shall we?

The packaging is kinda simple this time around. There's a slip case embodying the main packaging. Ain't nothing wrong with that as Hot Toys is notorious for constantly changing the way they present their offerings from time to time. Whatever protects the figure inside works fine with me. The slip case has a pretty neat image of Chris Evans as Captain America with the metallic wordings 'Marvel's Avengers' at the lower right hand corner, right above the 'Hot Toys' and 'Movie Masterpiece' logo.

The top part of the packaging clearly states the obvious of what to expect inside. I love the bold fonts and the colourful combination of colours.

Here's how the slip case looked like from the side. I dig that small Captain America logo.

At the back of the slip case, one can find the usual stuff from Hot Toys. All the copyright clauses, choking hazards, bla....bla...bla....you get the drift. The only thing interesting element here is that 'watermarked' image of Cap's iconic shield.....hahah.

Once you lift the slip case open, you'd immediately get to see the action figure itself standing proudly inside the figure tray. Let me just get the tray out of the box for a better view....

....and here we go. Apart from the main figure itself (plus the masked Cap head), you also get the unmasked Chris Evans/Steve Rogers, the hood (to which Steve Rogers pulls over his head if he's going for the masked look), a staggering 9 inter-changeable hands and extra hand pegs. Oh wait...this is just the 1st tray...what about the 2nd below it? But before that, let's take a closer look at the 2 head-sculpts shall we?

Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

Now, as most of you have read or heard before, there were a barrage of criticisms given out by collectors upon seeing the unmasked head. I personally have no qualms at all with the masked head, that's Chris Evans through and through underneath that mask....nice work HT! But I gotta agree with the masses when they say that unmasked head is a bit 'off'....I'd say they got it about 80% right with the Chris Evans likeness. It's very weird that HT didn't nail this head-sculpt dead on when they've already given us that convention exclusive 'Rescue' version earlier...it had that head-sculpt which was a dead ringer for Chris Evans!

Turn the masked head in whichever way possible...you'd still see the Chris Evans likeness from any angle!

Now, let's go into the 2nd tray to which I've mentioned earlier. Hot Toys has been generous enough to have given us not one, but TWO shields for your Cap! One is the brand new 'shiny' version and the other is the battle-damaged version. We also get that Chitauri weapon which in my opinion is a bit unnecessary but nevertheless a nice addition to the list of accessories. Oh yeah, you also get that standard Hot Toys figure stand too, personalised with Cap's name at the front and the word 'Marvel Avengers' on the base right where the figure places both his feet.

This is how I'm gonna display Cap on my display shelf. Good ol' fashioned Captain America with his mask/hood on! Everything is reproduced in detailed by Hot Toys. In fact, if you ask me, having these action figures in hand gives us an opportunity to inspect the suits as how they appear in the flick. Trust me, unless you hit pause while watching your DVD/blu-ray disc, there ain't a better way to have a closer look at them suits.
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

Notice how the 'inside' of the shield is faithfully re-created by HT. Really love the details...the nuts and bolts and stuff.
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

Cap's suit comes with a 'zipper' at the back. Not really whether that works or otherwise as I don't tinker with my 1/6 figures, let alone stripping them off their clothes! They stay exactly how they were just like how they came in their box....LOL.
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

I totally appreciate HT giving us the 'unscathed' shield. It really looks shiny. So shiny in fact that my son left some fingerprints on it when he held it for a closer look! Again, I'm not too sure whether this is the exact shield that came with the "First Avenger" figure.
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

Here's another reason to get Cap.....the Chitauri weapon. A nicely crafted piece of accessory this is! As I said before, a bit unnecessary but nevertheless a great inclusion. At least you'll feel that you're gettin' your  money's worth here (I think).
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

You actually have to take his whole hand out of the peg and remove his gauntlet/part glove to fit his arm into the weapon.
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

This is to re-create that scene in the film where Cap used the weapon against the Chitauris themselves.
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

I bet many of you collectors look forward to the Chitauri 'spear' that comes with Black Widow too.
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

Now let's take a closer look at the 'unmasked' head. For the record, it's not as good as the one that came with the 'Rescue' version but I'm thankful we got a second head unlike the 'First Avenger' version. Since I've already got that out of my system, I'm not gonna mention anything on it again after this.
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

Funny enough, he does look like Chris Evans from certain angles. Spot on dare I say it!
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

Just take a look at the different angles and you see for yourselves how one minute he looks like Chris Evans and a complete 'stranger' the next!
Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

Apart from the excellent reproduction of the uniform, I'd like to give a special shout-out on Cap's boots. It's kinda like a throwback to the military boots he wore in First Avenger but with a modern update. I'm a WW2 buff so I appreciate the attention to details.

The second shield is a total wreck compared to the 1st shiny 'unscathed' version. This one looks really battered and battle-damaged. It doesn't even have any speck of shine left on it. Really excellent work done by them HT sculptors here...the damage and battle-wear looks realistic and really 'weathered' instead of 'painted on'.

Hot Toys Movie Avengers Captain America

THE REBEL'S VERDICT: It's no secret that Hot Toys' offerings are by no means cheap! Its rising prices concern even the rich. Here is an excellent representation of the star-spangled Avenger from the movie which should be in every Marvel fans' display shelf, that is....if you could first stomach the retail price. I got mine for about USD185, which to me was a bit on the high side considering that this is not even a 'DX' offering. But I guess the inclusion of 2 shields (really love that battle-damaged version!) and that Chitauri weapon more than made up for it. I can ignore the 'inaccurate' unmasked head as I'd probably display him with his mask on on my shelf, but your mileage may vary as some may prefer to display him without. This figure is truly detailed down to the very minute intricate detailing i.e. both head-sculpts, the uniform, accessories etc. hence I feel he's worth the price you pay for him and not to forget that these Hot Toys figures are somewhat like investments, their prices appreciate over time and you can always sell them back on the secondary market if you have the need for dough later in life. Like I said before, if you can stomach the price, then this figure is a MUST for your Marvel collection!
