Hot Toys' Movie Avengers Thor...

Hot Toys 1/6 Movie Avengers Thor

At the time of writing this, I had just finished re-watching the Avengers movie blu-ray at home (again) with my better half and kid. Gotta admit, it gets better and better with every sitting. I love Joss Whedon's directorial style and I think he's the right man to further helm future Avengers movies. Now that Avengers 2 and 3 is a go, I can only wish that the list of cast will remain the same through out. Most fanboys had concerns that RDJ might not even make it to the second Avengers flick but that unfounded rumour turned out to be untrue as the man has put down his signatures on paper to resume his role as the great billionaire, playboy & philanthropist for the next couple of movies. But for me, I also would like to see the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo to continue with their respective roles (can you believe it that I didn't mention Chris Evans or even Scarjo here? Haha...). Anyway, let's look into my latest Hot Toys sixth scale Avengers' figure, the God of Thunder himself....the Mighty Thor!

Let's start with the packaging.....

As with my previous HT Avengers sixth scale figure (I've only Cap thus far), I can't tell you how I love the huge a** character name at the top of the packaging. It really stands up among the rest of the Hot Toys packaging. The box which houses the figure and the accessories is 'protected' by a slip case cover which has a nice picture of the actor, Chris Hemsworth in character as Thor.

This is something that no one has not seen before if you're familiar with Hot Toys' packaging style since the beginning of the Avengers line with Nick Fury (or was it Hawkeye?) some time ago.

Once you remove the slip case and the inner protective window box you'll immediately arrive at the main figure tray which houses the action figure itself. You get a total of 7 hands (inclusive of the ones already fixed onto the figure), his Mjolnir hammer (an obvious MUST for a Thor figure!), the standard Hot Toys figure stand with the Avengers logo and Thor's name on it, extra hand pegs (thank you Hot Toys, you don't know how many of those we broke before just trying to switch hands!) and the impressive 'tesseract canister' from the movie.

Thor's cape is actually fit through a small opening on the tray and it flows right to the back. You might wanna take it easy while removing the cape through the small opening. I'm not risking any tear on my cape!

Here's a last look at Thor before I take him out for a photo shoot and permanent display on my action figure shelf. He's already impressive just sitting there pretty inside his figure tray!

I didn't really plan to collect all of the Hot Toys Avengers figure before but I had always said to myself that if I was gonna get just one or two, then Chris Hemsworth's Thor would be a must no matter what. Of course, we were made to go through the horrendous proto pictures of Thor some time back. If you can recall, the proto head sculpt resembled more of a cross between Karl Urban and Leonardo DiCaprio! Only after much noise by the fans did Hot Toys tweaked the head sculpt into what it is today. Kudos Hot Toys for making sure that the movie Thor actually looked like Chris Hemsworth!

I've read somewhere that posability was an issue with this figure as his suit restricts us from flexing him too much. Yup, those rumours/reports were correct. Ya' can't get much 'extreme' poses out of Thor in fear of his suit tearing up or starts to break at the seams. I ain't risking mine to find out! So what you have here is me posing Thor in 'safe' positions.

The suit, the armour and everything else is exactly how I remembered them to be in the movie. But seriously, come on, how many of us actually paused your blu-ray/DVD to intricately examine how the suits were on screen? I think for me it was the other way around though. I watched the movie while I took this figure out of its packaging. So that kind of gave me the chance to more or less compare between the on-screen Thor with the one-sixth version I had in my hands.

I honestly love everything about this figure (barring the restricted movement issues caused by the suit). Most of all, in my opinion the head sculpt is the real winner here...complete with the excellent sculpted hair. Both head sculpt and hair has good paint job on them with no blotches at all, typical of the strict QC policy imposed by Hot Toys.

Every nook and cranny details of the armour is delicately reproduced by Hot Toys for your pleasure that you'd swear if this armour was real sized, you can actually wear it into battle against the might of Loki and the Chitauris! I also dig how Thor's chain mail-like 'sleeve' is constructed by HT giving us an impression that they're steel-like but in actual fact they're soft rubber. However, I have a tinge of fear that this will crack over time so I'm gonna be really careful when posing his arms.

I also like Thor's gauntlets (I think that is what they're called?). They're quite detailed and reminds me a great deal of what them LOTR Elves wore in battle. I do have a minor grouse here. One of the straps holding the left gauntlet on my Thor came off during my photo shoot. I discovered that they're actually glued on very lightly on the inside. A small and quick fix with super-glue would do the trick. But the point here is that I'd like to warn you about the fragile condition of the straps and how they're easily snapped off with excessive force. So becareful...you might have a hard time glueing them all back together.

I was told that unlike the previous 'movie' Thor, this Avengers' Thor has his cape securely fasten onto the top of his armour via his shoulders. The previous Thor had removeable cape and many collectors didn't fancy that as the cape doesn't really stay in place....or was it 'I had a difficult time inserting the tabs into the designated slots' etc?

Hot Toys 1/6 Movie Avengers Thor

Thor's cape has a nice flow to it. That's probably due to the 'pleated' design of the cape that allows it to have a more 'systematic' look to it when allowed to flow freely from Thor's back.

Anyway, before I go into the accessories, I'd just like to talk a bit more on the head sculpt. As I've mentioned before, this is Chris Hemsworth through and through. I'm glad they made without the Urban/DiCaprio likeness. It's always good for companies to preview their prototype to collectors for their response and criticisms. This would definitely allow for further improvements to avoid collectors from being frustrated and shocked should they be allowed  to only view the final product when they get those in hand. I'd say it again, both head/facial features and hair are superbly done and they have great paint on them.

Let's go into Thor's accessories....

When you talk about the God of Thunder (no I'm not talking about Gene Simmon/KISS's song here!) one can never run away from the image of a certain 'Godly' mystical hammer called Mjolnir. By Odin's beard, this is THE Mjolnir scaled down to one sixth scale! It's made of steel and it does have a considerable amount of weight. I was rather worried that the action figure was gonna have a hard time holding the hammer aloft (luckily the joints are tight) due to the sheer weight of this hammer!

The handle/shaft is delicately re-created too. Love the details!

Hot Toys 1/6 Movie Avengers Thor

But what amazes most is the intricate detailing on the hammer itself. You can see inscriptions on the top and at the sides. I'm pretty sure one (if not all) of these says the mystical clause....'only those deemed worthy can hold Mjonir aloft' or something like that.

Hot Toys 1/6 Movie Avengers Thor

Just becareful not to drop this on your foot or on your cat! It IS considerably heavy and can cause some minor injuries to say the least. Well, not 'Marvel Select Juggernaut' heavy, but you get the drift.

Next we go into the Tesseract cube....enchanted Asgardian artifact/object of unparalleled power...bla bla bla...this is the object that The Red Skull paraded in the First Avenger movie for his world-domination purposes and later fell into Loki's hand in The Avengers.

Hot Toys 1/6 Movie Avengers Thor

I love the way Hot Toys recreated this. The Tesseract cube is inside the canister as it was in the movie. But beware, the handle does NOT turn like it did in the movie! My 5-year old held one side of the handle and asked me to turn the other side concurrently with him......reminiscing the scene from the movie! We discovered that they DID NOT turn as expected.....LOL. You might break it if you turn hard enough I guess......so beware.

Hot Toys 1/6 Movie Avengers Thor

The Tesseract fits perfectly into Thor's hand(s) and I can't wait to have Loki later to hold the other end of the Tesseract canister to re-create that scene where both were 'beamed' up back to Asgard.

Cap came with the huge a** Chitauri gun, Black Widow came with the spear-like Chitauri weapon...and Thor here comes with the Tesseract canister. So my question is...will Iron Man Mark VII and The Hulk come with any Chitaurian-artifact-weapons as well? I know Fury and Hawkeye didn't come with any....right?

THE REBEL'S VERDICT: I'm gonna say this again. These one-sixth action figures gets more ridiculously priced by the day. It's no secret that Hot Toys, as the industry leader, sets a rather 'bad' example among the other one-sixth producers in the market by setting a very high bar when it comes to pricing. Of course, one wouldn't mind such premium pricing if the final product does live up to its prototype. Enterbay, the closest  company Hot Toys has for a rival, has been heavily criticised as of late for its lacklustre offerings and those were priced even higher than of a Hot Toys'! Luckily, Thor here hits the mark and I'm glad to add him into my 'selective' Avengers Movie one-sixth action figure collection line-up. He's worth every penny for him and that makes me a little wary of my next one-sixth Movie Avenger, whether he/she would live up to the already excellent Thor! If you can stomach the price, then by all means, this figure is highly recommended for your Marvel collection!
