Star Wars belongs to Disney &.....Episode VII?! Geek-worthy news indeed!!!!

SW Disney

I guess by now the whole world knows that Disney had acquired the whole Star Wars franchise rights aka Lucasfilm from dear ol' Uncle George for USD4 billion. I was a bit skeptical in the beginning to tell ya the truth. I mean, come on...these are the guys who brought us family cartoons and kiddie-themed shows so what good can the team bring to our beloved universe? My wife had a very interesting rebuttal to my defensive rant when she pointed out that maybe Disney will give the whole franchise a 'reboot' or a kick in the @$$...."Remember what happened by the time we reached Episode III? It was all downhill after The Phantom Menace!"......so point taken.

Dear Uncle George himself mentioned that it's about time he pass the Star Wars torch to a new generation of filmmaker....fresh ideas needed to ignite the whole Star Wars passion bla bla bla. So in the end I admit, maybe the Disney takeover isn't such a bad idea after all eh? After all, Disney immediately announced that there will be a whole new Trilogy in the works aka Episodes VII - VX....with the first one slated for a 2015 release.......now how cool is that???!!!!!! Haven't been this giddy since The Phantom Menace was announced all those years back in the 90s. Holy geek-ness!

Speaking of Episode VII and beyond, I guess the burning question in every fanboys' head is on the direction of the new Trilogy story plot. Sources from Lucasfilm had outright denied that the new trilogy will follow any of the Expanded Universe novels or any of the countless books & comics that had emerged ever since the original movie hit the big screen in '77. Sorry guys....looks like there'd be little (or no) references to Admiral Thrawn, Mara Jade, Jaina/Jacen Skywalker etc.

In a nutshell, this was what unofficially mentioned by the peeps at Lucasfilm:

"In other words, forget the Star Wars novels. Forget the graphic novels. Forget everything you think you know about what happens to Luke Skywalker. (According to sources) Episode 7 will literally be nothing you've ever seen or read before from the Star Wars universe...."

So clearly, the new trilogy will be based on a completely new and original storyline but will most probably run concurrently with the events portrayed in the official 'canon' storylines i.e. Thrawn Trilogy etc. So here's hoping that they'd be special easter egg mentions on the events based on Timothy Zahn's books (wishful thinking).

Now, would any of the original cast members be involved at all with the new trilogy? I personally would prefer if (at least) Ford, Hamill and Fisher be roped in immediately for the project. That alone will garner endless fan interests and therefore build up the hype and anticipation for the new Trilogy. What we know from the Net suggested that Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were among the first to be notified about the Disney takeover and the plans to do Episodes VII - VX....so that's telling us something. Hamill was reportedly ecstatic to learn that the possibilty of playing Luke Skywalker is heavily on the cards! Come on Disney, work your magic (and chequebook!) to convince Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams etc to come back into the franchise once more! Anthony Daniels will no doubt will re-sign to come on board in a jiffy.....the man's been on board on almost every single Star Wars project that has Threepio in it....LOL!

Great time indeed to be a Star Wars fan! Let's wait for more news from Disney/Lucasfilm.....
