NA He-Man's Slush Head....

Slush Head: Scaly Goon Squad Thug

As a Masters of The Universe fan, I can't tell ya enough how frustrating it was when the original cartoon series (He-Man & The Masters of The Universein the 80s was cancelled due to poor ratings (*yeah right*) and many other 'corporate excuses'. Some blamed the spin-off She-Ra series as being the catalyst for its downfall. Since then, Mattel had attempted to revive the franchise through a couple of 'new' series, namely the New Adventures of He-Man (or simply 'NA') in 1990 and the 2002 series of the same name (or better known as the 200X series among fans). Let's just forget about the 200x series. Today, I'd like to bring your attention to one of the characters off the 1990 series. In that continuity, He-Man is no longer on Eternia and he has been summoned to a futuristic planet called Primus to battle a group of Space Mutants, who were later joined by Skeletor, He-Man's long-time adversary. I've actually skipped the first Space Mutant Optikk action figure some time ago but when I saw Slush Head's preview pictures, I knew just had to have him for my collection! So let's see if he's up to the mark.

The packaging

Here's a quick look at his packaging. Nothing new here if you're already familiar with Matty's MOTU Classics' packaging. It has been the same since the inception of the line way back in 2008. Like Optikk, Slush Head's packaging came with the 'Space Mutants' sticker at the front to signify which faction he belonged to.

You can opt to fill in water or gel into Slush Head's dome helmet to simulate how his toy looked like in the 80s. Honestly, you can opt not to do so like me. I not too keen to risk any water leak that will spoil the plastic/paint etc.

Of course, Matty took the liberty to give him a back story and...a 'real' name. Wonder who came up with these names? How did they come up with 'Kalamarr'? Their randomness never cease to amaze me.

Let's rip the figure out of the plastic enclosure.

Slush Head has all of the standard MOTU Classic articulations. Plus, he shares many body parts from previous MOTUC releases. His head is brand new however, as I don't really recall any of the past figures having a dome/aquarium for a head before. I love his body armour, it looks rather futuristic.

His 'backpack' is superbly done too. It has the 'gas tank' attached to it since he has to 'breathe' out of water.

Slush Head has a rather unique weapon. He can either hold it like a gun, but if you turn it the other way round, it serves as his 'space axe'!

He also comes with two (2) tentacles that can be attached/re-attached to the sides of his body. At the end of each tentacle is a 'gripping tool of destruction'....(it does have a nice ring to it now, doesn't it? LOL). I'll show you how Slush Head use both 'weapons' against a certain enemy in a future post.

Funny thing is, both the tentacles don't stay in place that well on my Slush Head figure. I wonder if this is an isolated case or is everyone having the same problem? Having said that, this figure still rocks and would look good among your MOTUC villains irregardless if you have the rest of the Space Mutants (Optikk and Karatti have been released thus far) or not.

THE REBEL'S VERDICT: It's no secret that these MOTU Classics figures are exorbitantly priced, part of it due to the ridiculous shipping costs slapped onto international collectors. Many fans have resorted to becoming cherry-pickers (or 'Cherry Pick-Or' as per the 'in-joke' take on the many characters name) as a result of the high price and bought only those characters that they want or like. Ol' Slush Head here is strictly for youse hardcore 'Masters' fans only, especially those who have fond memories of the New Adventures of He-Man series back in 1990. Some of us may not even remember NA's run during the its run in 1990 let alone the many characters that graced the series. Although I was leaning more towards the likes of TMNT towards the end of the 80's and my interest towards the MOTU franchise had dwindled quite a bit since the first 'Classics show was cancelled, I actually remember the NA series fondly as it attempted to revive the 'spark' that was once was. I gotta admit, between the 200x series and NA, I actually liked the NA series more. At least the NA series wasn't an attempt to 're-boot' the original story from the 80's classic series we had endeared so dearly in our hearts!

What's next to be reviewed? Yup, you've guessed it. Matty Collector recently released the main protagonist of the NA series....none other than Mr. Ponytailed He-Man himself.....stay tuned!
