Huh?.....Disney To Buy Marvel Entertainment For $4 Billion!

Yup, you've heard it right. This piece of news is spreading like wildfire in the internet now. The likes of Wolverine, Spiderman, The Hulk, The Punisher and the rest of the superheroes are gonna join the ranks of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and the lot! Is it a good thing? I don't know....Possible cross-overs? Scary!!!! LOL.

The Walt Disney Co. had announced on Monday that it has agreed to purchase comic book and action hero company Marvel Entertainment for about $4 billion. Wow! Way to go Stan Lee!!! What a way to earn quick bucks!!! Heheh, I guess that's business.

On the business side, if Marvel shareholders approve the deal, they would receive $30 per share in cash and 0.745 shares of Disney for each share of Marvel that they hold. The deal is valued at $50 per Marvel share, more than a 29% premium, based on Friday’s closing price.

Marvel has launched a large number of action-hero movies over the past decade. Last summer’s "Iron Man" blockbuster was the first to be fully financed and produced by by the comic book company. Marvel also holds the rights to 5,000 popular action hero characters, including Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and Thor. This is an excellent opportunity for Marvel to build upon its well-known brand and character properties by riding on Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.

Marvel will now join the likes of their biggest rival, DC Comics who themselves, were acquired by Warner Bros in the late 60s.

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra...The Baroness 3.75" action-figure!

Frankly speaking, at the point of writing this, I have yet to watch GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra on the big-screen. Why? For a couple of reasons actually. Technically I have not been able to find the time to do so (been pretty tied up with work/family commitment lately etc.) but largely it's due to my paranoia of not wanting to mingle with strangers (in the times when a certain flu virus is on the rampage!) in an enclosed + air-conditioned hall for a considerable long period of time.

Heck, I made up my mind a long time ago that I'd be restraining myself from picking up any 3.75" action figures other than the Star Wars line. Which means that I wasn't gonna get any of the classic GI Joe re-released 25th Anniversary action-figures (although I was tempted many many times!) and ESPECIALLY the movie toys.

But after much consideration and countless review readings later, I've decided to pick up one figure from the movie line for review purposes (yeah, right!). The choice of which figure to pick was quite obvious based on the rate of it's shelf life. In fact I was quite lucky to still be able to find this yesterday at a TRU near my place. It was the only one left, thank God!

For the record, this is my 1st ever 3.75" 'Joe figure purchase since I last got my hands on the vintage figures back in the late 80's. I know a couple of local collectors who seemed to collect every single figure churned out by Hasbro for the movie, but to me, having just this one is satisfying enough (for now that is!).......The Baroness in her 3.75" glory!:

I'm not sure when I'll actually do a review on the figure itself, but for now it looks good inside the packaging, with the excellent packaging-art that comes with it....heheh. Did someone say Sienna Miller?

For the full review on the actual action-figure, I'd like to share a clip which shows an online review of The Baroness by a Youtube user who goes by the moniker 'ToySpot'. Pretty cool and concise. Take a look:

Fallschirmjäger Ultimate Edition from DiD Corporation

Fallschirmjäger are German paratroopers in World War II and is touted in military warfare as the first to be committed in large-scale airborne operations. They came to be known as the "Green Devils" by the Allied forces they fought against, probably because of the colour of the uniform that they wore. You can read more about them on wiki's page. Basically, I'm not too crazy about the Nazi Fallschirmjäger since there were not much coverage/books written and TV series made about them, as opposed to the Stephen Ambrose book and later on HBO's Band of Brothers which concentrated on the American paratroopers of Easy Company.....LOL!
Personally, I prefer the heer wehrmacht (German infantry army) division because I truly dig the paraphernelias i.e. uniforms, weapons, equipments, vehicles, accessories, gears etc. I did a feeble attempt to kitbash one much earlier since I couldn't find an existing 1/6th scale version of it anywhere in the market.
DiD Corporation has been giving us collectors some great WWII action figures lately, with the Airborne Medic being my favourite thus far. I've reviewed the said figure much earlier too. Their latest offering, which came barely a month after their Pvt. Jackson (US WWII 2nd Battalion Ranger) was announced, surprised many. I think many collectors will gasp in awe as there would be no guessing on who is the 'celebrity' used as the headsculpt. Take a look! He's none other than Daniel Craig, aka Mr-blond James Bond! This one's coming out in Sept '09 and I'm pretty sure many collectors will be tempted to get him merely for the accurate headsculpt of Mr Craig. I personally think that DiD's take on Daniel Craig's likeness is somewhat better than Loading Toys' version. You can see that version here through toyhaven's review page.

See the complete preview pictures here on DiD's homepage for a more detailed look at the action-figure and its' accesories.

He-Man & Skeletor Figures: Updated & Re-Released!!!

For those who had been following closely and drooling on mere sight of these Masters of The Universe (MOTU) re-released classic action-figures, here's a chance to get your hands on two of the main characters, He-Man and Skeletor. Both figures, although have been released in 2008 (sold out within minutes on matty's online store!) are getting updates and being re-released again at MattyCollector.com! Both of the originals were massive hits when they were first released, but the sculpting team of Four Horsemen and Mattel had a few minor changes they wanted to do to make them even better.

The changes made were:

For He-Man:
Shoulders corrected (reversed)
Red around the eyes reduced
Overall body gloss toned down

For Skeletor:
Left hand corrected for "tight grip"
Face paint improved
Bio updated to include Demo-Man™

He-Man goes on sale November 16, 2009, and Skeletor goes on sale December 15, 2009. No MOTU collection will DEFINITELY be complete without them and these babies are gonna go fast!

Hillarious Star Wars TV-styled posters...

Found this during some random browsing on the internet while I was looking for some reviews on some Star Wars action-figures I was hoping to score on eBay. These really made my day...hopefully you'll crack a smile too! Heheh....

Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds to be immortalised by Hot Toys!

Inglorious Basterds is the latest film offering by the great Quentin Tarantino. Currently released worldwide albeit different dates in August, the film is highly anticipated as it stars among other, Brad Pitt. Surprisingly, Hot Toys has provided us with the teaser poster for Aldo Raine, the lead character portrayed by Pitt in the film. Which can only mean one thing....a 12" Aldo Raine is coming our way soon! I just hope the headsculpt doesn't come with the facial expression above...hahah!

A brief info on the film: Set in an alternate history of the Second World War in which the entire top leadership of Nazi Germany, namely Hitler, Goering, Goebbels and Bormann attend a film premiere in Paris celebrating the exploits of a German sniper who had managed to kill 300 American soldiers in Italy. Most of the film's timeframe is set in early June 1944, after the D-Day landings but before the liberation of Paris

The film tracks the separate attempts to kill Hitler by two disparate forces, one being the "Basterds", a motley crew of Jewish American soldiers lead by Aldo Raine (Pitt's character) out for revenge against the Nazis. The Basterds have a modus operandi whereby each man must cut off the scalp of a dead Nazi soldier, with orders to get 100 scalps each. The Basterds allow one German soldier to survive each incident so as to spread the news of the terror of their attacks.

Check out wikipedia's page for more info on the film. Alternatively you could check out the official website for more related stuffs.

PS3 is officially announced by SONY!

I've talked about Sony's plans to launch the slimmer version of the PS3 aka the PS3 Slim version in my earlier post. Seems that not many retailers in Malaysia were aware on Sony's plans. I went to an authorised Sony Center yesterday with my wife and instantly inquired on the availability of the machine i.e. when would it reach Malaysian shores, how much would it be etc. Some spectacled store assistant attended to our query and almost instantenously lashed out to me and my wife by saying "Those are just rumours. You might not get them".....What the heck? "Authorised" Sony Center mind you! I said that it has already been reviewed by Sony's top officials on the internet....and that the impending 'official' release is imminent. I can't believe the lack of enthusiasm portrayed by the store assistant. For once I thought that he was utter lazy to check on the release date, but later I came to the conclusion that he was plain ignorant and simply not in the know about the whole PS3 slim -version fiasco.

Nevertheless, the PS3 was in fact announced over GamesCon on 18th August, hence quashed all skeptical views that the slim PS3 was a mere hoax. Japan's gonna get it on 3rd September, thus I believe we won't have to wait long (some horror rumour mentioned Asians would only get theirs somewhere during Q1, 2010!!) before South East Asian geeks and fans can finally see them on retailers' shelves soon! Woo-hoo!

Burnley.....1 Manyoo....NIL! Great show by an underdog!

Last night Burnley stunned Manyoo with Robbie Blake scoring the soliditary goal. A stunning volley that surpassed goalkeeper ben Foster's reach. According to reports (I didn't watch the match as I had anticipated heaps of goals to pass through Burnley's keeper! :p).
Credits to Sir Alex this time (this is a RARE ocassion indeed where I praised Fergie for his sporting behaviour....), he was gentlemen enough to admit that Manyoo were not playing up to their best and Burnley was simply superb in repelling Manyoo's attack plans. Heck, Michael Carrick's penalty was even saved by Burnley's keeper, Brian Jensen...to further rub salt into Manyoo's already miserable night.
All hail the underdog Burnley!! Would we see more upsets in the EPL next?

SONY Playstation 3: Slim Version @ USD299!

First of all, let me just thank fellow blogger Ilhamology for giving the heads up on this very interesting piece of news. My wife and I have been stalling our decision to purchase a game console for months now. We came close to buying the 360 a couple of months ago but decided to wait in anticipation of some good news from Sony....and here it is ladies and gentlemen!
One must be tempted to read more when Sony announces a new slimmer version of the 120GB HDD PS3 (Yes, a 120GB PS3!!), a new motion-sensing controller technology (not-so-new to the 360 though!) and THE much anticipated price cut (from an astounding (USD600 to a mere USD299!!!) ALL at the same time!

Expected to be released in North America on 1st Sept '09, some online stores have been declaring that they'll start shipping by the 24th of August! Gosh, that's just days away!

Here are some interesting facts about this marvellous piece of technology:

  • PS3 Slim is 33 percent smaller and 36 percent lighter than the previous PS3 models.
  • PS3 Slim has new 45nm process manufactured Cell processor that runs at the same clock speed as the old 60nm processor. A smaller processor would be more power efficient and power consumption can be brought down by two-thirds which will reduce fan noise.
  • Sony has designed PS3 Slim to be used horizontally (as PS2 is used) UNLIKE the earlier PS3 models. However, Sony offers a $24 stand to hold the PS3 Slim vertically.

Can't wait for this to be released over here in Asia! We'll finally get to play all those games we've been yearning to try out!

Geek rules!

Former Real Madrid player Michel Salgado for Blackburn Rovers!

According to many sources, former Real Madrid defender Michel Salgado has expressed his excitement at the prospect of playing in England as he nears a move to Blackburn. This news may not come as exciting as Man City's ridiculous buying frenzy or some other big name signings, but for a small town EPL club such as Blackburn, that IS big news. Heheh...

The experienced right-back was released by Madrid earlier this month after spending ten years at the Bernabeu. Salgado has been considering over a number of options since Sam Allardyce confirmed his interest last week. But reports and rumours have been flying in Spain that Salgado has accepted an offer from Blackburn and the 33-year-old says he is happy to be on his way to the Premier League.

"This was the most interesting proposition in terms of sport, I have always wanted to play in England," Salgado is quoted as saying in the Spanish press.
The funny thing is, Blackburn already has TWO capable rightbacks in the likes of Brett Emerton and Lars Jacobsen, both current internationals for Australia and Denmark respectively. So why the need for yet another right-back when it's midfield players that the club currently lacks?
'Nuff said.
